Zardozi

The textile is embellished with embroidery. Jaipur is famous for the many different kinds of embroiders that live in the city from zardozi embroiders that use metal wires on silk base to gotta patti applique embroidery. To begin the design process the cloth is fixed to a wooden frame and the design is traced on. In gotta patti thin sheet of fine thread, comprised of yarn of silver polished with gold, that is embroidered all over the fabric. The gota is placed on the fabric and a special thread called kalabandhu is used for stitching the gota. Zardozi is a form of metal embroidery, originally using gold-coated silver wires, patronized by royalty including the Mughals and is said to have been brought to India by the Turko-Afghans. Zardozi uses various kinds of threads and stitches like dabka (a spring type of thread), kora, katori, tikena, salma- sitara, gijai, badla and also glass and plastic beads at times. Other forms of embroidery like mukaish and aari taari have evolved from the tradition of zardozi embroidery.
