Koftkari

Koftkari

An elaborate form of inlaying is a metal inlay process called koftkari. Koftakari, the technique of encrusting one metal onto another, was widely used by the Gadi Lohars, the traditional armours of Rajasthan, to create a range of weaponry. Sifter metals like silver or gold are often inlayed in steel. The softer metals are more prone to wear and tear but their malleability means that a wider array of designs can be created.

These hereditary crafts tracing descent from different portions in India have now made their home in Jaipur moulding to the unique aesthetic style of the city adding to the visual culture at both homes through utilitarian items and in a public setting through their contribution in ceremonial armours.
